In 2018, the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation awarded a grant to the University of Hawai‘i, John A. Burns School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine and Community Health’s Pacific Cancer Programs. The primary intervention focuses on health systems strengthening in the U.S. Affiliated Pacific Islands (USAPI) through three strategies:

  1. infrastructure strengthening, including telehealth policy, health system organization, and coordination, health system/community collaboration
  2. health care provider training via telehealth education and case management delivered via a Project ECHO® (Extension for Community Healthcare Outcome) framework
  3. training community health workers to also provide cancer-related outreach and services

The telehealth training is a telementoring program aimed to bring health care providers and subject matter experts together through videoconferencing (via Zoom) to increase workforce capacity to improve cancer care in the USAPI. This model does not provide direct patient care. Instead, a team of existing health specialists and educators provide cancer education and clinical expertise to train health care providers in the local communities. The curricula covers cancer prevention, risk factor reduction, screening, diagnosis (within the context of their local resources), treatment considerations, survivorship, palliative and end of life care. Case studies are intertwined in these didactic education sessions to equip health care providers with the knowledge and support they need to provide timely and quality cancer services in the USAPI.

While the 1-hour sessions target primarily physicians and nurses, USAPI health department staff, hospital/clinic staff, and other cancer/health advocates also join these telehealth sessions. Participants receive continuing education credit or certificate for attending the live regularly scheduled series.

This project was funded from 2018-2022 by the Bristol-Myers Squibb Foundation’s Specialty Care for Vulnerable Populations Initiative.  Beginning 2023, the Pacific Cancer Programs maintained the monthly telehealth sessions voluntarily.  Effective 2024, the session will be offered quarterly on the 3rd Thursday at 4:00PM HST (3rd Friday at 12:00PM ChST).
